Andermatt, Switzerland

Best for: off-piste adventurers

When to go: November to April 

Put back on the map in 2013 with new lift links to Sedrun, Andermatt has modern and luxurious accommodation choices, an outstanding snow record and extensive advanced ski terrain. The Gemsstock mountain, located just south of Andermatt, offers some of the best off-piste in Switzerland for those looking for an adrenaline rush, whilst the gentler Nätschen side of the ski area offers some cruiser slope options. Best for: via ferrata adventures

When to go: July and August

The Queen of the Dolomites, as it's affectionately known, has a rich history and is surrounded by the stunning scenery of the pale limestone rocks of the Dolomites, which glow a warm pink/orange hue at sunrises and sunsets. Cortina d’Ampezzo in the Summer months is a hive of activity with Via Ferrata (climbing via protected iron paths), e-biking and hiking just a few of the activities on offer to explore the stunning peaks of the Dolomite mountains.

When to go: Christmas and New Year

When to go: March to May

Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka all have renowned locations for cherry blossom sightings alongside exploring the art, culture, and traditional cuisine of the cities. Japan is starting to warm up in the spring months, with comfortable daily temperatures averaging around 15°C. Best for: family-friendly skiing

When to go: November to April 

Arosa is an attractive choice for a family ski break due to its relatively short transfer time from Zurich, variety of slopes, multiple kids ski areas, range of flexible accommodation and extensive culinary credentials. From the kids ski areas, little ones can progress easily onto the many wide sweeping blues the resort has to offer, whilst adults can enjoy the early bird or late night skiing opportunities in Arosa.
