Arosa
The Valsana Hotel & Apartments have won the award for the World’s Best Green Ski Hotel in 2019 thanks to a sustainability-focused design. Part of this involved using recycled building materials from the old building. A major part of the development is its eco-power source – the entire Valsana complex is heated using their ‘ice battery’ which captures and reuses wasted heat, increasing energy efficiency. As well as their ice battery, the Valsana Hotel & Apartments have implemented numerous sustainability initiatives including offsetting CO2 emissions by aiding various projects through their myclimate partnership. There are train shuttles to the hotel and free charging stations for electric vehicles. There is a focus on using local produce, going paperless and there is also an option for guests to offset their emissions further by donating to a myclimate mountain gorilla project in Rwanda. The Valsana Hotel & Apartments have outstanding eco-credentials, it’s a brilliant choice for an eco-conscious, no-fly ski trip. Aside from reducing your carbon footprint by choosing to travel by train, the journey from Chur to Arosa covers magnificent views over the Schanfigg Valley, a jewel in the Canton of Grisons.
Luxury train journey: Eurostar to Paris (2hrs 15) → TGV to Zurich (5.5hrs) → Train to Arosa via Chur (2.5 hrs) Round trip under 10.5 hours with an 85% reduction in emissions.

Zurs
Zurs are pioneers in the Alps for sustainability and protecting the environment. The resort built a community biomass plant that was finished in 2011 and since 2013 all hotels and businesses have been connected to it. Saving 8 million litres of heating oil annually and produces 65 million kilowatt-hours of energy per year. CO2-neutral wood chips that originate from a 200km periphery are used instead of fossil fuels and 80% of energy is generated from the renewable biomass. It is a great destination for responsible travellers. Many of the properties in Zurs are making changes to be more energy-efficient so there are lots of eco-conscious options on where to stay. For example, the Arlberghaus has solar panels on the roof which supplies clean energy for the entire hotel. It’s a great choice for an environmentally-friendly ski trip.
