The Emerald Island of Elba

Set in the crystalline waters of the Tuscan Archipelago, Elba is a pure Italian treasure. Probably best known for its famous exile, Napoleon Bonaparte, this somewhat sleepy but varied Mediterranean island offers much more than you might expect for a family holiday in the sun: mountains, high granite cliffs, shady forests, Mediterranean scrub, sandy beaches and hidden coves are all there waiting to be explored, as well as some stunning old monasteries and historical sites to get your cultural juices going. With the peaceful islanders seemingly welcoming Napolean and all his family, we can’t think why he didn’t just stay put rather than trying to conquer the rest of the world
Those who have complete ‘down-time’ on their wish-list when on holiday could do no better than whiling away the hours on the beautiful Biodola Bay on the north side of the island. It’s also a must to explore the beauty of the rest of the island, perhaps by mountain bike or on foot. In part due to the island’s renowned walking festivals, there are numerous well-marked itineraries for you to explore on your own or with a guide: wander through chestnut forests, discover hidden monasteries, and witness views of the island which are nothing short of spectacular. If you love wine, there are many vineyards you can visit and your family will enjoy the Tuscan restaurants and night markets to be found in many of the nearby villages and ports.
For younger visitors, there’s lots of fun to be had with tennis, football and golf sessions in our Scallywags and TheZone programmes, always a highlight with our accredited coaches who ensure solid skills are developed. If the kids crave some fun in the sea, the water-sports are second-to-none – particularly the banana boats! For older children who may have outgrown more conventional kids’ clubs, the PB Adventure Academy incorporates everything active teenagers enjoy, be it waterskiing, SCUBA diving, mountain biking, as well as tennis and golf – all delivered in an un-clubby sort of way but gently supervised by fun managers who also take the group out and about to the nearby ports and villages for shopping and evening expeditions.
There are two lovely Hotels in Biodola Bay: Biodola and Hermitage which offer the ultimate in Italian hospitality. Experience a warm welcome like no other, and together with Powder Byrne in-resort service, this will ensure you make the very best use of your precious time away. Both hotels offer excellent family accommodation – with spacious gardens, private beaches and all the facilities, both on and off the water, you are guaranteed to be spoilt for choice for things to do. If eating local seafood and other Tuscan specialities whets the appetite then you will not be disappointed in the 5 restaurants available to enjoy. And make sure you leave some time for a bit of pampering in the spa!
