The Dolomites: a Playground for Family Adventure

Renowned for having the most breathtaking mountain landscapes in the world, the Dolomites boasts incredible views that aren’t to be missed. From soaring peaks to Alpine Lakes, there is so much to enjoy during summer in these Italian Alps.

The Dolomites entice some of the most adventurous souls to its peaks with an almost unlimited variety of exciting pursuits.
Popular for summertime hiking, this breathtaking region offers some of the most wonderful trails for both thrill seekers and families. Boasting over 400km of legendary hiking trails, there’s certainly something for all abilities.

It’s hard to imagine it today, but this beautiful and peaceful region once witnessed the horrors of WW1 between 1915-1917. Now a famous UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Dolomites is regarded as one of the most attractive mountain landscapes in the world but it is also a great area to visit for an insight into the fascinating history that unfolded here.
Translating from Italian to ‘Iron road/path’ the Via Ferrata consists of a metal wire that is connected to the surrounding rock at numerous intervals, which provides a fixed form of climbing protection that climbers can physically attach themselves to. Originally constructed and used by the military in WW1 to navigate the mountains, the newer hardware in place is popularly used by mountaineers to help them cross the steep terrain safely whilst soaking up the gorgeous mountain views. Perfect for families, the Via Ferrata are best explored with a guide to benefit from their extensive knowledge of the area and its history.

The Dolomites is, without a doubt, one of the greatest cycling areas in the Alps. Exhilarating mountain passes and steep gradients make for an exceptional experience for both professionals and casual riders. With thousands of miles of trails and picturesque sights, this is a bucket list location for bike lovers.
Being such a popular cycling destination, the Dolomites plays host to a multitude of cycling races and events which run throughout the year. For both mountain biking and road riding, there are plenty of routes and varied terrain to experience in this breathtaking region.
For those that want to explore by bike but want a slightly more laid back time (it’s a holiday after all!) there’s the option of hiring e-bikes, which have a small motor that means you need to pedal a little less to explore the area.

There’s also the option to experience the Dolomites from horseback as you explore the meadows, picturesque pastures and rocky mountain passes. For families with children wanting to try something new or experienced riders seeking an equestrian adventure, the trails here are ideal for all abilities.
For those seeking even more adrenaline-inducing action, the adventurous high ropes course in Val Gardena is the perfect activity for adults and children alike. Suspended high in the treetops, the course runs between platforms with ladders, spiral staircases and bridges. At a height of between three and fifty metres above the ground, it’s sure to be a real thrill!
Also for the fearless, the zip line of San Vigilio di Marebbe, close to Alta Badia, provides an adrenaline rush like no other. You will soar at over 400m above the ground over a distance of 3 kilometers, making it the steepest in the world, and it’s also (in our opinion) the prettiest!
There’s also the incredible rush of white water rafting for those brave enough to conquer the rapids. The River Noce is regarded as one of the best for river sports, making it a prime location for thrill seekers. It’s a great activity for families with older children, provided they can swim, accompanied by your professional guide.

South Tyrol is home to some of the most beautiful, emerald green lakes, perfect for a picnic on the grassy banks and for a swim to cool off. Some of the most popular lakes in the region are the ‘Toblacher See’, which boasts breathtaking scenery, great fishing opportunities and beautiful waterfalls nearby, and ‘Lake Garda’ which is a haven for kite and windsurfers and the perfect place to soak up the Italian sunshine.

The Dolomites’ dramatic and inspiring landscapes make it the perfect location for an incredible ski adventure but it is equally worth a visit in summer to explore the lavender-lined mountain paths, peaks, and valleys, to savour the extraordinary wine and cuisine (including the area’s six Michelin-starred restaurants!) and soak up the charming Italian mountain culture. One thing is for sure, you won’t be short of exceptional, active pastimes to fill your days!
