Our Top Picks: Hiking in Lenzerheide
Lenzerheide in summer is a magical place with all manner of natural delights, which is why we’ve just launched our new ‘Alpine Summer Pop-Up’ here, and one of the best ways to explore this Alpine wonderland is by going on a hike. There are 73 hiking trails for you to discover within the region of Lenzerheide, ranging from easy to difficult and from less than three kilometers to over 90 so there is really something for everyone! These are our top picks for family hiking in Lenzerheide.
Brambrüesch to Pradaschier
Difficulty: Easy
Distance: 9.6km
Duration: 3 hours 14 min
A beautiful and relatively flat tour that starts at the summit station of the Brambrüesch cable car and winds through pretty forests and open meadows that allow for panoramic views before reaching the Pradaschier-Bahn mountain station with its cosy mountain restaurant. There’s also the option to hike via Dreibündenstein, which adds 2.7km to the tour.
Enjoy a delicious lunch on the lovely sun terrace and get ready for some afternoon adrenaline: the longest toboggan run in Switzerland is a must and takes you over 3km down into the village of Churwalden, reaching speeds of up to 40km per hour, although the lever break means that you can decide on a speed you’re comfortable with. If you’d prefer, it’s also possible to walk or take the chairlift down to Churwalden. The trip back to Lenzerheide village from Churwalden is only 11 minutes by Powder Byrne shuttle.
Parpaner Rothorn to Lenzerheide
Difficulty: Moderate (with a very easy 30-minute alternative)
Distance: 8.9km
Duration: 3 hours
This entirely downhill trail starts at the summit of the Parpaner Rothorn, which appears more lunar than terrestrial with its striking red rock. This was once a mining area for iron ore and even gold if you believe the legend, and there are interesting information boards about the geology and history of the area. The trail leads from the West summit where the lift station is to the undeveloped Eastern summit before continuing down past the small mountain lake of Lai Plang Bi and to Alp Sanaspans where there’s a mountain hut that serves delicious pancakes during the summer. The view across the meadows to the valley of Lenzerheide and the Piz Scolattas and Stätzer Horn mountains is breathtaking.
The trail then continues to its highlight, the beautiful waterfall at Sansapans with its idyllic barbeque area in the forest. It is paradise for families those with smaller children needn’t miss out as there’s a quick and easy alternative route to get there. The botanical forest trail leads from the middle station of Scharmoin to the waterfall in about half an hour without a very strenuous change in altitude.
Piz Scalottas to Piz Danis
Difficulty: Moderate
Distance: 8km
Duration: 3 hours 30 minutes
Catch the chairlift from Lenzerheide to the Tgantieni station and on to Piz Scolattas and enjoy a coffee and the panoramic views on the sun terrace of the quaint Junehütte, built in 1937. When setting off on your hike, head over the South ridge towards Piz Danis and at the summit you’ll be wowed by the beautiful peaks along the horizon: Piz Ela, Piz Mitgel, Piz Kesch and the Grisons panorama mountains
Continue over the north ridge and pay attention because this section until Stätzersatte is a bit tricky. Follow the trail and you’ll soon reach the modern 8-seater gondola that will carry you down to Heidbüel, right at the new ‘Weatherweights of Heidbüel’ family area with its own 2.5km long trail suitable for younger children, a fun play area, and barbeques. It’s perfect for a relaxed and outdoorsy post-hike lunch. There’s also a serviced kiosk where you can buy drinks and quick meals if you’d prefer. The trip back to Lenzerheide village is only 12 minutes by Powder Byrne shuttle.
