Food Stories from Portugal’s ‘City of Light’

Nuno Mendes’s new book, Lisboeta is out, offering recipes from Portugal’s ‘City of Light’ so you can create his delicious Lisboan dishes yourself. There’s also the option to sample his incredible cuisine at his London restaurant, Chiltern Firehouse, but nothing compares to experiencing the real thing so we’ve summed up our top picks of Lisbon restaurants to experience all the best of this vibrant city’s food scene.

Lisbon is a thriving foodie hub with many top chefs and many of the trendiest restaurants, so we’ve rounded up our favourites to help you follow your taste buds around this wonderful city.

Our spectacular resort in Sintra, Penha Longa, is a 30-minute drive from Lisbon so it’s the perfect destination for a day trip, or perhaps for a few nights’ stay before heading to the laidback atmosphere of the long-time royal hideaway of Sintra.

To kick off the taste exploration of Lisbon, head to Cinco Lounge for an exceptional cocktail. From traditional classics to innovative originals, the menu is full of delicious concoctions and there’s even the option to take part in a cocktail workshop, which is great fun and means you can reminisce about your trip by treating friends and family to the delicious cocktails you learnt to make.

Manteigaria Silva on Baixa

Located in the Ribeira Time Out Market is Manteigaria Silva, a haven for lovers of cheese, charcuterie and Portuguese wine. Grab a cheese and cured meat board, some freshly baked bread and a bottle of delicious wine and find a pretty spot on the edge of the nearby river to enjoy a lovely picnic.

Rio Maravilha

For an evening completely out of the ordinary, visit the incredible Rio Maravilha (‘Marvellous River’ in Portuguese). The name pays homage to Lisbon’s Tejo River and Brasil’s Rio de Janeiro and the food reflects this fusion with modern twists on typical ingredients and recipes from both countries. Vibrant colours and eclectic décor set the scene for this delectable fusion cuisine, with cocktails paired with each dish. This isn’t the place if you’re looking for a quiet dinner – go for the electric atmosphere if you’re after a festive night to remember

 Tascada Esquina

You don’t have to look hard to find cutting-edge cuisine in Lisbon! For a creative, avant-garde take on traditional Portuguese cuisine, Tascada Esquina is well worth a visit. Enjoy their delicious and beautifully presented dishes in the relaxed, informal atmosphere.

Ze da Mouraria for lunch

If you’re looking for a traditional, old-school Portuguese restaurant for yummy one-pot dishes such as octopus and rice, bean stew with cabbage and chorizo, or a baked fish and vegetable pot then head to Ze da Mouraria for lunch. Frequently booked out ahead of time, make sure you have a reservation. It’s located in a lovely part of Lisbon in the former Moorish Quarter.
