Cycling in Penha Longa

Explore the extensive rolling hills of the Penha Longa Resort in Sintra, Portugal by bicycle, with on-site rentals available for children aged 4+ and plenty of fun trails for the whole family. For keen cyclists or families with older children there is the option to explore further afield with tailor-made cycle tours around Sintra and the surrounding area. Cycling within the resort

The hotel has bicycles available to use within the grounds of the resort. Explore the sights of this stunning national park including a 14th-century monastery, the royal apartments and several gardens in the Penha Longa Historical Circuit. The cycle rides are all short distances can be tailored to your intensity (low, medium or high) so are a perfect activity for the whole family no matter the cycle ability or age.

Cycling in Penha Longa Resort

For beginners: Histórico blue trail (1.3km) – This short route is more ideally suited to walkers (it takes about 30 minutes) or families with younger children and visits the historical sites of Jardin Do Nuncio, Jardin Do Sao Goncalo and Azenha.

For intermediates: Serra red trail (2.2km) – The Serra route is ideal for families with slightly more confident children on bicycles, this route weaves around more historical sites and woodlands.

Aqueduct at Penha Longa

For more of a challenge: Pinheiro yellow trail (8km) – The Pinheiro route offers up some scenic views as it follows the road around the Penha Longa Resort. A highlight of this route is cycling past the 18th Century Assamassa Aqueduct, which was used to irrigate the cereal crop. 

The routes are all also suitable for jogging or walking circuits. 

Cycling around Sintra

The Powder Byrne team have rounded up some of our favourite picturesque cycle routes winding around Sintra. All of the loops start and finish in Sintra and are suitable for families with children aged 14+. 

Quinta de Regaleira

For beginners: King of the Hill (8.8km with 293m of climb) – Explore some of Sintras most scenic attractions in this short bike ride past the Moorish castle and Pena Palace. Stop at Casa Das Minas on your way back into the town of Sintra for a slice of homemade chocolate cake with stunning views. 

For intermediates: Sintra Parks Epic (24km with 640m of climb) – This scenic bike route is great for a sporty all-day tour with time to explore these world-class parks and palaces. Take a break at the Refúgio di Ciclista half-way around for some authentic, traditional grilled meats and fish for a typical Portuguese experience. 

For a challenge: Atlantic Adventure (37km and 763m of climb) – This route is the most challenging. Cycle through the serene roads of the forest until you reach the beautiful beaches of the Estoril coastline. This route also passes by the entrance of all monuments, Regaleira, Monserrate Palace & Gardens, Capuchos Hermitage, Moorish Castle and Pena Palace. Água e Sal or Crôa on the coastline are great places to stop and refuel with ocean views.
