An Unforgettable Adventure in Peru
Peru is home to a section of the Amazon rainforest and Machu Picchu, an ancient Incan city set high in the mountains. It’s a holiday that boasts amazing views whilst trekking, many rich traditions, memorable buildings and the wildest of landscapes. One thing is for sure, you will come home having explored and discovered the exceptional.
With Powder Byrne every holiday is bespoke so we can cater to your every need and provide an itinerary that suits the whole family. With that in mind, we do have some itinerary suggestions to be used as a starting point, which you will find here. They cover the majority of the many exciting things to discover in Peru.
One of our clients’ favourite activities is trekking the Inca Trail to experience Machu Picchu for themselves.
In order to protect this unique World Heritage site, visitors must hold a permit in order to hike the Inca Trail. Only 500 permits are issued for any given day, about half of which are for porters, cooks, guides and other staff, meaning only 250 tourists can visit each day. This makes planning ahead a must and we recommend booking your trip 8 months or more in advance.
The 104km trek through the Sun Gate to Machu Picchu is great for families as there is no camping involved.
The first day starts with a transfer to Machu Picchu, where you begin your trek. You start by visiting the restored ruins of Chachabamba before going through the tropical cloud forest towards the base of Winay Wayna. Take a deep breath as you then climb the Inca stairways through breathtaking terraces and water features.
With your English-speaking guide, you will stop to enjoy a packed lunch with a view, as well as the sounds of the tropical songbirds. Taking a few more sets of stairs you arrive at Intu Punku, the gateway of the Sun. Then the breathtaking view of the Machu Picchu will be before you. Make sure you remember to pack your camera, as you can never get enough photos of this stunning landscape!
On the second day, you will explore Machu Picchu: one of the Seven Wonders of the World, and my gosh does it exceed all expectations. Perched precariously on the hilltop, it’s protected by huge cliffs. Arriving early, you will explore the ruins in the company of your guide who will take you on a two-hour tour before leaving you and your family free to wander. Eventually, the time comes to an end where you will get a transfer back down to the train station before you board it and look onto the Urubamba River.
This is just one of the amazing adventures we advise you go on when travelling with Powder Byrne. There are so many other great activities and wonders for you to see in Peru.
