An Incredible Week in Crete – By Ivana Roche, Senior Travel Consultant
I am frequently asked which Powder Byrne summer destination stands out as my favourite. Selecting just one can be quite challenging because each of our resorts offers its own distinct and exceptional qualities. However, there is one destination that has captured my heart and kept me coming back each year: our breathtaking resorts in Elounda, Crete.
Set against the backdrop of the enchanting northeast coast of the Greek island of Crete, Elounda stands out for its extraordinary blend of natural beauty and authentic local charm. Over the years, I have been consistently impressed by the destinations’ ability to offer a perfect balance of relaxation, adventure, and cultural exploration.
For many years Powder Byrne has partnered with two wonderful properties in Elounda, the five-star Hotel Porto Elounda and sister property, the all-suite five-star deluxe Elounda Peninsula. From the moment I first visited these properties, I was captivated by their stunning location , the pristine private sandy beaches, and the warm, welcoming atmosphere created by the dedicated staff.
In Porto Elounda, every room features spectacular sea views and spacious and elegantly designed in a modern Greek style, with many offerings lovely outdoor areas and private pools.
The Elounda Peninsula Suites are perched on a striking cliff peninsula, offering breathtaking sea views that change throughout the day. Each suite is elegantly designed with a spacious, modern layout and features a private pool, perfect for your family to cool off and relax during the midday heat.
Each of these properties are ideal for both a relaxing family beach holiday and cultural exploration. I recommend visiting Spinalonga and Heraklion. Spinalonga, known for its history as a leper colony and the inspiration for Victoria Hislop’s novel The Island, can be reached via boat trips organised by the hotel’s helpful concierge, or by the Powder Byrne Client Concierge team if you prefer to plan ahead.
The hotel offers numerous activities, but an external highlight of mine is the water park in Kastelli, about an hour away. It’s a fantastic day out and great fun for all ages.
Dining in Crete is a true highlight. These properties combine to feature eight restaurants, each offering different cuisines. My personal favorite is Sumosan with its stunning waterfront setting and glass floor, allowing you to view the fish swimming below as you enjoy your meal and a glass of wine.
There are also excellent local dining options nearby. Barko in Agios Nikolaos and The Ferryman in Elounda are well-regarded, but my top pick is Giorgos Taverna in Plaka. With its fantastic location and high-quality food, dining at Giorgos with views of Spinalonga is a memorable experience.
I suggest to some more adventurous clients the option of renting a car to explore Crete’s charming villages and hidden beaches. During July and August, Powder Byrne provides comprehensive in-resort services, including our fantastic children’s program, ensuring parents can relax knowing their kids are having a great time in a safe, supervised environment.
The week in Crete always flies by, so it’s best to have your next adventure lined up when you return home from this paradise!
